This course introduces students to the concepts, technologies and design principles behind Augmented Reality (AR). It begins with the definition and history of AR and the hardware and interface technologies that make it possible, then shows how AR connects with the Internet of Things (IoT) to bring live data into the real world. Students learn how to visualise data and design interaction techniques for navigation, object selection and manipulation, and system control, and compare the different types of AR displays and the tracking methods that keep virtual content aligned with reality. The course also covers collaborative AR, human factors, design guidelines and evaluation techniques, and closes with future trends and open challenges. Through lectures, real-world examples and exercises, students gain the knowledge to analyse, design and evaluate AR applications.
