This course is designed to enhance students’ awareness of chemical hazards, risks, and occupational safety and health within the laboratory setting. It emphasizes the identification and proper use of common laboratory equipment, understanding their applications, and the adoption of appropriate laboratory techniques to ensure safe and effective laboratory operations. The course also develops students’ competence in conducting Hazard Identification, Risk Assessment and Risk Control (HIRARC) and Chemical Health Risk Assessment (CHRA), a requirement under the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994 (Act 514) of Malaysia. In addition, students will be introduced to relevant regulatory and standards requirements, including ISO 45001 (Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems) and MS ISO/IEC 17025 (General Requirements for the Competence of Testing and Calibration Laboratories). The roles of the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH), the Malaysia Accreditation Scheme (SAMM), and the Malaysian Institute of Chemistry (IKM) in supporting laboratory safety, certification, and accreditation will also be discussed.
