This course provides students with the knowledge and skills to perform literature searches, critically appraise evidence, and prepare and deliver effective presentations on emerging topics in nutrition to diverse audiences. It combines lectures, practical sessions, and a student-led seminar in which students, working in groups, plan, organise, and host public seminars delivered to both a general audience and nutrition professionals. In the student-led seminar, students take ownership of their learning by proposing their seminar, contextualising the course learning outcomes to their chosen topic, and reflecting on their development throughout. Students are assessed through the seminar proposal, the seminar presentation, a communication portfolio (a scientific abstract, a plain-language summary, and an infographic), a reflective portfolio, and peer and supervisor evaluation of leadership and teamwork. By the end of the course, students should be able to critically evaluate current scientific literature, communicate nutrition science effectively to both scientific and public audiences, and demonstrate leadership in organising a scholarly event.
