Course information

This course will provide an overview of the factors that influence the health of trees in the forest and the urban environment. The main topics will include forest diseases, insects, and abiotic stresses including human-induced disturbances. Types of diseases that will be highlighted are diseases caused by biotic pathogens including root rot, wilt, canker, rust, blight, decay, and others. Attention is also given to the insect's activities that are related to tree health and wood fiber losses. Pest-related topics will include the fundamentals of entomology, and important insect pest groups that include termites, Ambrosia beetles, herbivorous insects, insect pests of wood and seed borers, nursery and forest plantation insect pests, and concepts of insect pest management. Abiotic stresses include the impact of environmental stress, soil, and human-induced disturbances caused by the use of chemicals and changes to the physical environment.
