Course Synopsis:
This course aims to develop students' knowledge of the vocabulary and language needed for basic communication in English and to enhance the four major language skills of listening, reading, speaking, and writing. The general objective of the course is to prepare students to attain Level B1+ of the Common European Framework of References (CEFR). Approaches are taken to engage learners by practising the four skills via pairs, group work, and communicative activities involving various themes and issues from around the world. Blended learning mode is used in the course activities and assessments, including online quizzes, presentations, discussions, speeches, and essays.
Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs):
By the end of the course, students should be able to:
1) demonstrate knowledge of appropriate vocabulary and correct language structures in answering quizzes and delivering a speech on a familiar topic within their field. (Assessment 1 & 3)
2) present orally a simple, prepared travel review individually and their opinions on their groupmates' travel reviews in a group discussion. (Assessment 2)
3) write a short, simple group opinion essay on a topic of interest by using simple language to justify a viewpoint. (Assessment 4)
