This course was designed purposely to give (first-year first semester) Communication students an introduction to communication knowledge and its main fundamental disciplines. It will start with communication definitions, basic elements of communication, functions of communication, and basic communication models.
Along with the content of this course is the brief history of communication study and evolutions (follow the chronology) of media development (from the prints media to electronic follow by mass media to the interactive media) till which can be seen today mediascape. This will follow by a different type of communication that covered intra & interpersonal communication, verbal & nonverbal communication, and small & big group communication. Students will also be introduced to disciplines under communication study particularly introduction to journalism, broadcasting, and public relations emphasizing its basic roles and power as an introduction to the student. Complexity in dealing with issues, audience, and media organizations will also be touched.
Thus, this course is very important for first-year students to understand and explore the communication process. Although the aspect covered through this course is widely broad, it is designed as a brief introduction to communication before students entered more specific courses. It is extremely important for each student to build a strong foundation of communication study before going further in the coming semester.
