This course aims to provide students with an understanding of the role computation can play in solving problems. The students will learn to create computational models to understand and predict something about the world around them. Among the topics covered are optimization, data analysis and statistical learning. At the end of the course, the students will apply the learned skills to explore, process, analyze, and model data in a mini-project. This course will use MATLAB as the programming platform.
This course is intended to introduce the concepts of probability and
random processes and to discuss their application to engineering problems.
Particular emphasis is given to the application of these methods to systems
analysis. Among the topics covered are an introduction to probability theory,
and the modelling and analysis of probabilistic systems; Sample space,
probabilistic models, conditional probability; Discrete and continuous random
variables; and elements of statistical inference.
