SYNOPSIS
This course provides an in-depth exploration of botanical concepts relevant to Dendrology. Students will gain a solid understanding of the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature (ICBN) and learn essential herbarium management techniques. A comprehensive overview of plant taxonomic systems will equip students with the knowledge to apply taxonomic concepts effectively in Dendrology. Practical sessions will focus on utilizing flora checklists, plant and wood classification systems, and identifying key characteristics of dipterocarps and non-dipterocarps. Field discussions and hands-on experiences at Sandakan Herbarium and Forest Reserve will reinforce learning and provide opportunities to apply theoretical knowledge. The course will also delve into global vegetation patterns, with a particular focus on forest types in Malaysia and the world. Students will explore dominant tree species within each forest type and examine the relationships between these species and their specific habitats.

Dendrology is the foundational science for forestry and conservation; it is impossible to be effective in either field without the ability to accurately identify and understand woody plants. Knowing the trees is the essential first step to knowing the forest.
FC10403(SEKSYEN 1) EKOLOGI HUTAN [2-2024/2025]
Forest ecology is an essential part of the basic
knowledge required by foresters. Understanding the ecological aspects of forest
science will build a strong foundation that will enable the students to
understand the ecological processes that occur in tropical forests and how
forest management decision will potentially impact these processes. This will
lead to a better understanding of forest management systems and an increased
awareness of sustainable forestry practices.
This course will discuss the basic concepts of ecology
and living things interaction with the environment in tropical forest. Focus
are given to the ecosystem and its impact to the community along with the
process that happen to the trees and living things in the forest. Aspect of
conservation and management are also being discuss

course will highlight on the important of IR in this era
of technological advancement and emphasizes the methods of scientific
writing for students in higher education and provides a structured approach to
dissertation writing procedures, the IMRAD structure and research design. The
key to the scientific writing begins with a guide in the preparation of
research proposals for Fyp’s,
writing-up dissertation and gathering information for Literature review (LR).
The whole process starting from selecting research topics, proposal
preparation, literature writing, methodological processes of data collection,
analysis, until the process of writing a results and discussion, conclusions of
the completed thesis manuscript. This course also provides
an introduction to
the theory of science and emphasizes research design in forestry, life sciences
and other related disciplines.

FL30203 INTERAKSI POKOK-TANAMAN-TANAH DAN PENGURUSAN NUTRIEN [2-2022/2023]
This course discusses the interaction between plants, soils and crops. Students will be exposed on agroforestry systems that involve sharing space below ground and above ground. Trees and plants interact in various ways, including positive and negative interaction effect on the growth of both trees and crops. This course will also discuss the processes involved such as the cycle of soil organic matter, nutrients and water. Practical and appropriate site visit will be conducted.
FP10203 HIDROLOGI HUTAN [2-2022/2023]
This course will expose students to the field of physical hydrology in the forest ecosystem. Detail discussion on the water cycle components will help students to understand the importance of each process involved, and able to apply the knowledge further in the management of forest or specifically in water catchment area. Students will also be taught how to do hydrological data observation for example, rainfall, interception, infiltration, evaporation and river discharge. Other topics that will also be discussed are variation in the weather, climate change, monitoring and water quality analyses and human impacts on hydrological regime.

The course is an important element of forestry that provides exposure to wildlife management and assessment of threats to species and protected wildlife.
Wildlife management is the application of ecological knowledge about vertebrate wildlife populations and their relationship with plants and other living organisms to achieve a balance between the needs of humans and wildlife. This course exposes students to the concepts and principles of wildlife management problem-solving. After learning the basics of zoology and the factors that lead to the extinction of species, the students will gain an understanding of the selection, design, and management of protected areas for wildlife and assess threats to species, methods of management, and species protection to minimize the threat of extinction.

Urban trees and woodlands contribute greatly to the quality of life in towns and cities. They enhance the environmental, aesthetic, and wildlife value of urban areas, and create a range of recreational and educational opportunities. The practice of traditional forest management often emphasizes the economic values (timber, pulp, etc.) of forest resources, while urban forestry is more interested in the environmental and aesthetic values of trees.
Urban Forestry is a specialization within forestry that encompasses the management of naturally occurring and planted trees in urban areas. In this course, students will be given more emphasis on the management of assemblages of trees, more specifically sum of street trees, residential trees, park trees, and greenbelt vegetation (including trees on unused public and private land). It comprises three parts; the importance of trees in cities and how to use them; appraisal and inventory techniques of urban vegetation; planning and management of public vegetation, especially street trees, park vegetation, and forested greenbelts
